Day at the Bank: Building Brighter Futures with Fifth Third Bank

On October 18th, Fifth Third Bank teamed up with Heart of West Michigan United Way and Dean Transportation to host an unforgettable event, "Day at the Bank," aimed at empowering young minds through meaningful connection. Sixty-one high school students from Grand Rapids Public Schools and NHA’s Wellspring Preparatory High School joined us for a full day of learning, exploration, and inspiration.

This wasn’t just a day out—it was an opportunity for students to gain vital skills, open doors to future possibilities, and take big steps toward financial independence!

The students began their journey with an exclusive tour of Fifth Third Bank's downtown location, where they had the chance to see firsthand how a bank branch operates. Friendly Fifth Third team members shared insights into the daily workings of their roles and why being part of the Fifth Third family is so rewarding. It was a unique opportunity for students to see what careers in banking look like and hear from professionals dedicated to helping people reach their financial goals. These early insights can help spark ideas and shape future ambitions!

A key part of the day was dedicated to hands-on financial literacy workshops. Fifth Third’s volunteers led two sessions that demystified crucial financial topics: the difference between credit and debit cards as well as budgeting basics. The students were excited to ask questions, discuss common misunderstandings, and receive practical advice on navigating their financial futures. These are skills they’ll carry with them—empowering them to make smart financial choices, avoid common mistakes, and build strong financial foundations. Knowledge gained today will create a ripple effect that empowers these young leaders for years to come.

To make the day even more memorable, students captured fun moments at a selfie station decked out with playful accessories. Then, it was time for a delicious taco lunch at the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce, where they connected with friends and listened to a Chamber representative speak about the future of Grand Rapids and the key role they will play in shaping it. Inspired and well-fed, students grabbed their Fifth Third swag bags—filled with materials to keep them motivated on their financial journey—as they boarded the bus to return to school.

A special shoutout to Dean Transportation for generously providing transportation to and from the event, making this empowering experience possible for every student. We’re beyond grateful to our partners at Fifth Third Bank and Dean Transportation for helping to make this impactful day happen. This "Day at the Bank" was an unforgettable milestone, marking the start of a financial literacy journey that will help these young leaders make a difference in their own lives and the lives of others.

Together, we’re building a brighter future, one informed decision at a time!
