For families like Carissa’s, unexpected life changes can turn stability into uncertainty overnight. Thanks to a United Way partner Carissa was able to keep a roof over her family’s head during one of the most challenging times in her life.

For more than five years now, our local business community and United Way have joined forces to create a day that embodies the power of unity and compassion.

Deanna Mey was sitting down to watch the evening news when the lights began to flicker. At first she didn’t think much of it: That happens now and then at her house off 6 Mile Road near Comstock Park. Then it suddenly became very dark, and she heard something strike her house.

“Close your eyes and envision the best hug you’ve ever received,” Jones-Willis said. “Think about how safe and connected you felt. How stress and anxiety seemed to retreat. That’s exactly what the Heart of West Michigan United Way has been to me.”
