Our impact Agenda
No matter the challenge, United Way’s comprehensive approach and community roots mean we can find a way forward.
Heart of West Michigan United Way is uniquely suited to address ongoing problems affecting our communities. We recognize that low-income families and individuals—including those residing in rural parts of the county, people of color, immigrants, refugees, veterans, those with disabilities, older adults, and returning citizens—disproportionally experience the burdens of poverty. Therefore, we focus on employing solutions that effectively serve these priority populations, reduce disparities, and create opportunities
A SYSTEM OF SUPPORT
We recognize the need to intervene in crisis. We provide immediate, short-term relief for those who are hungry, without a place to sleep, or who have experienced domestic violence. At the same time, we understand that in order to create sustainable change, we have to address the root causes. We fund job training, financial counseling, affordable housing, youth education, and many other programs that help individuals and families build toward a more secure future.
By connecting individuals and families in under-resourced neighborhoods with local assistance programs and investing in solutions to reduce poverty at the root cause, we are alleviating the ongoing burden of poverty and helping our neighbors build toward self-sufficiency.
