Tax season is in full swing, and for many, that means worrying about how to pay to file their returns. Fortunately, there are several free options available for local taxpayers through United Way.

Each year, the Kent County Tax Credit Coalition (KCTCC) trains more than 200 volunteers who prepare and file federal, state, and local tax returns for families and individuals. Volunteers completed more than 6,000 returns last year alone, refunding $5 million into the hands of those who need it most to pay overdue bills, make car repairs, save for the future, and bolster the local economy.

You might qualify for KCTCC’s free tax services if your total household income is $56,000 or less. In addition to completing and filing your return, your tax preparer can also help you apply for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a refundable federal income tax credit.

Schedule your tax prep appointment by calling 2-1-1, or find the contact method that works best for you at hwmuw.org/211. Please note that appointments are limited, so make sure you contact 2-1-1 as early as possible. Due to COVID-19, traditional in-person appointments are not available this year. Instead, KCTCC is offering drop-off and virtual options to maintain the health and safety of both clients and volunteers.

Another way to file your taxes for free is through MyFreeTaxes.
