How to Prepare for This Weekend's Ice Storm

Most West Michigan counties are under winter storm warnings for this weekend. Forecasters are predicting ice storms that could result in power outages across the region. Make sure you’re prepared if the weather turns nasty.

Make Your Plan

If the power goes out and stays out for an extended period, you’ll be glad you thought ahead. Put your flashlights in an easy-to-find location, stock up on water and nonperishable food, and make sure you know how long any refrigerated medications can be stored at higher temperatures. Because of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, never use gas-powered heaters or camp stoves indoors. Visit Ready.gov for more information.

Assemble Your Emergency Car Kit

While the best thing to do in extreme weather is to stay off the roads, you may find yourself driving when the weather takes a turn. That’s why it’s always a good idea to keep an emergency kit in your vehicle. Jumper cables, shovel, flashlight, blankets, and bottled water are all recommended for Michigan drivers. Learn more about what your kit should include.

Keep Your Fridge Closed

If the power goes out, remember to keep your refrigerator and freezer closed as much as possible. Food will stay cold in your fridge for about four hours. A fully stocked freezer will hold its temperature for 48 hours. If you have a cooler and the ability to get ice, think about pulling it out of the basement or garage before the power goes out so it’s handy.

Charge That Phone

Now that most Americans have ditched their landline phones, it’s more important than ever to keep your cell or smartphone charged. A few good ways to save battery life: Charge it ahead of time, lower the screen brightness, switch to airplane mode, and close non-essential apps. You can also purchase a portable charger and juice it up ahead of time to make sure you’re ready.

Know Where You Can Go

If you find yourself in a house without heat for an extended period, you have options. The first step is to check with friends or family in unaffected areas to see if you can stay with them. If not, Grand Rapids agencies like Degage Ministries and Mel Trotter Ministries are available. Additional shelters may open up, depending on need, in which case our 2-1-1 team will be able to refer you them.

When in Doubt, Call 2-1-1
