YOUNG LEADERS SOCIETY GRANT SUPPORTS IMMIGRANTS

These are tough times for many immigrants in our community. Harassment, threats of deportation, and general anti-immigrant sentiment cause many to be fearful of going to the police when they experience crime.

Migrant Legal Aid is working to end that fear. In January 2019, Heart of West Michigan United Way’s Young Leaders Society announced a $10,000 grant to fund the work they're doing to reopen lines of communication between the immigrant community and local law enforcement.

Migrant Legal Aid is using the money to train “safe officers” in local departments, including Grand Rapids Police Department, to be liaisons with the migrant worker community.

In this video, Young Leaders Society members explore how the grant is making a difference in the lives of immigrants in our community.
