WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH: MAKING HISTORY
by Suzanne Moody, Executive Assistant
On this final day of Women’s History Month, I thought it fitting to learn more about two African American women who’ve made history at the top of their fields.
The first is Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court. If confirmed, she’ll be one of only two justices who served on both the U.S. District Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals prior to joining the Supreme Court, with the second being Justice Sonia Sotomayor, herself a notable woman in history for being the first woman of color, first Hispanic, first Latina, and only the third woman on the Court. If confirmed, Jackson will be the fourth.
The second notable woman is Coach Niele Ivey, the first African American woman named Head Coach of Notre Dame’s women’s basketball team. Coach Ivey, a single mom of Jaden Ivey, who currently plays college basketball for Purdue University, made many personal sacrifices during her two careers—first as a professional basketball player, then followed by her 17 years in coaching, which led her to her current position at her alma mater.
